Memories…Old and New
December 24, 2019
It was at this time a year ago many of us likely reflected on 2018 and wondered what 2019 would behold. Now as we move forth towards a new year and decade we again reminisce and reflect, but also look ahead to 2020, a year that I would observe the numerals seem to connote will be one of “perfect vision.”
In looking back, I am infinitely grateful to those who have allowed me to be a part of their lives this past year as a coach. There are few moments of greater satisfaction and delight than when a client experiences a breakthrough! In addition I am thankful for my family and friends, who have been such positive encouragers along the way.
For family, friends, and acquaintances, all of you, I hope in the days ahead you will experience the memories of:
· The childlike anticipation you felt when the moments preceding December 25 just couldn’t pass quickly enough.
· The sounds of the Salvation Army bell ringers or another strand of Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
· A joy like George Bailey felt when he came to the realization of how great a difference he really did make in the lives of others in “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
· The smells that permeated your house in Christmas’s past: baking yeast rolls, a turkey roasting in the oven, the reliable standby of a green bean casserole, the sweet scent of a slice of pumpkin pie with a dollop of whipped cream.
· The heaviness of tummy and eyelids that evolved into a gentle and cozy nap in your favorite chair in front of a sporting event or Hallmark movie on TV.
· The soft tip toeing back towards the kitchen fridge later in the day to prepare an encore plate to heat in the microwave.
· Catching one of the new movie releases at the end of Christmas Day.
· Pick up football games in the vacant lot down the street or basketball in an open gym during the time of Christmas break from school.
· Being with the person you most wanted to be with when the clock struck midnight on December 31.
And now, as we look ahead to the upcoming new year of perfect vision, I hope that we will each create new and exciting memories:
· A time of establishing goals and actually finding ourselves still on track at Labor Day with the resolutions we made on January 1.
· A year of not only making new friends, but putting forth the effort to follow up and build on our current relationships in making them even richer and deeper, taking time in our engagements to consider the possibility of that intersection actually being a sacred one.
· Making it a season where we finally learn that new language, pick up that guitar, or go back to school.
· Finally take that trip to Europe or another continent or even state we’ve never visited previously…or, getting the chance to go back to a place of fondness where we haven’t been for a long while.
· Seeking forgiveness for a past transgression or more importantly forgiving someone else.
· Making a conscious effort to engage with and learn from someone who may be a little different from us in ethnicity, religion, or political affinity.
· Listening more and speaking less.
· Identifying a place where there’s a possibility that maybe, just maybe, we can be part of a year where an even greater sense of joy and peace will prevail around us, in our homes, neighborhoods, communities, country, and permeate throughout the world.
I share my blessings with each of you for a Merry Christmas, enjoyable holiday season, and peaceful and prosperous start to your New Year.
